Books:

  • Watchmaking, by George Daniels, 1981, available on Amazon.  This is the bible of modern watchmaking, cleanly typeset and with beautiful photographs and illustrations.  Its one shortcoming is that it is now dated, without any mention of tools and processes now common in product design (e.g., how to iterate a design with sketches, CAD, and models).
  • Touhrbillon, by Steffen Pahlow. http://www.s1p.de/2016e/f/fe1.html , Sketchy English, but beautifully illustrated, with hundreds of images (photographs, images, and CAD).  Over 500 pages, with literally every detail involved in the fabrication of a tourbillon pocket watch.
  • Modern Calendar Watches, by B. Humbert, 1954, Published by Journal Suisse D’Horlogerie et de Bijouterie, Edition Scriptar S.A., Lausanne.  Thorough review of mechanical calendar watches up to 1954.  Lots of practical notes on repair.
